What We Do

The Nancy Painter Foundation helps single mothers and their children who are in urgent financial need.

The Nancy Painter Emergency Grant Program

Single mother households often exist with little or no financial cushion and no financial support from other family members.

A single mother's economic dependence can be derailed quickly and severely by life’s unforeseen circumstances. A car accident, job loss or child’s illness can result in a mother’s loss of income and loss of housing for her and her children.

This is where the Nancy Painter Foundation steps in to provide rapid financial support to a single mother’s household.
We provide grants up to $2500 per recipient. After receiving a mother's grant request from one of our non-profit community partners, the Nancy Painter Foundation pays the money owed directly to the creditors on behalf of the grant recipient.

How it Works

A single mother with an emergency financial need contacts one of the outstanding non-profit organizations (listed below) with which we have an established community partnership. The Community Partner organization forwards the mother's letter of need, along with a completed Emergency Grant Application to the NPF Grant Committee. Grants are usually approved and dispersed within 48 hours of receiving the requests. Through this quick, streamlined grant program, we have been able to stop evictions, restore driving privileges, keep the lights on, keep kids in school, and give single-mother households urgent help when they need it.

Additonal Financial Aid Programs

Joni Berry Award

This annual award of $ 3,000 honors our beloved original board member Joni Berry, who was a dedicated advocate of the Nancy Painter Home for Single Mothers and their Children. The Joni Berry Award recognizes a single mother who exemplifies the successful transition of taking her family from surviving to thriving. It's meant to be a celebration of a single mother who has succeeded in creating financial and emotional stability for herself and her family and is pursuing a path to further growth or is striving to help others.

Understanding that many single mothers who are struggling to bring their families from surviving to thriving have no time or no resources for enjoying non-essential aspects of life, this award is intended to bring a little random joy to a special mother and her family. The money is given to the recipient to spend any way she would like, from taking her family to Disneyland or paying for that extra special something that she's been wanting.

Barret Slome Memorial Scholarship

For many single mothers struggling to provide for their families, one of the most significant challenges is unemployment, and one of the major causes of unemployment is lack of education.

The family of Barrett Slome, for whom this scholarship is named, believes greatly in the value of higher education in order to boost income and increase the odds of becoming financially stable. This annual scholarship of $3000 in Barrett Slome's memory will be awarded to a single mother enrolled in either a 2 or 4-year college or vocational school program. She must have completed at least one year of study in the previous 12 months and maintained a B average minimum.
